Apology
Arnel Pineda, the Filipino frontman of rock band Journey, apologized Tuesday to the National Historical Institute (NHI) for singing the Philippine national anthem incorrectly during the March 13 bout between Pinoy boxing champ Manny Pacquiao and Ghanaian challenger Joshua Clottey.
“I apologize for my dissatisfactory performance dun sa fight ni Pacquiao and Clottey sa Dallas, Texas, according to their standards. What can I do? I’m just doing my job… but then again hindi ako sorry kasi artistic freedom ko yon. It doesn’t make me less of a Filipino dahil sa nabago ang pagkakanta,” Pineda said in an abs-cbnNEWS.com interview.
“Ano ba ang bago? ‘Yong traditional na pagkanta ng ‘Lupang Hinirang’ ang gusto nilang marinig. On my part, I’m just doing my artistic freedom. I was there as Filipino representing Pacquiao and the Philippines. ‘Yun ang importante,” Pineda added.
NHI’s Bullsh*t
According to NHI chief Teddy Atienza, the anthem was sang slowly compared to the marching tempo of the original rhythm and the last two words was belted out and out of tune.
He said this was a clear violation of Republic Act (RA) 8491. RA 8491 prescribes that any person who will violate its provisions may be punished by a fine of at least P20,000 or imprisonment of not more than one year.
“Sa amin po personally hindi po niya nasunod ang sinasaad sa RA 8491 na ang sinasabi, ang pagkanta ng Lupang Hinirang ay dapat sundin ang komposisyon ni Julian Felipe,” he said.
“Ngayon po ay nangangalap kami ng ebidensiya at testimonya ng kababayan natin tungkol dito. Gagawin namin ang report at pag-aaralan ng NHI board kung ano ang aksyon ng aming tanggapan,” he added.
Atienza said the board might hold a special meeting within the week to discuss the issue.
Defending Pineda and every singer who sang the national anthem in Pacquiao’s fight
Personally, I’m freaking tired of those people who keeps on complaining about how the national anthem was sang. Does it really matter?? Each and every time someone sings in Pacquiao’s fight they have criticisms, the next time Manny Pacquiao fights, I won’t be surprised if they’ll just play a tape of the national anthem because of all the bullsh*ts these people are saying. No one would want to sing in the stage because it will just be repaid by a lawsuit from FELLOW FILIPINOS.
I love our national anthem, the lyrics is just so good especially when it comes to the part when you sing “ang mamatay ng dahil sayo” (To die for you). I really believe that our national anthem is one of the best out there compared to other countries. Let me ask all of you Filipinos, does it really matter to you if the tempo was slightly different? Either slower or faster? Or if they put artistic tunes to it like Arnel Pineda and other singers did? Because as a Filipino myself, I don’t care about the tempo or tune, it is the lyrics that matters to me and how you feel when you sing it. I personally liked Martin Nievera’s version of the song.
We always hear the Star Spangled Banner (US national anthem) in Manny Pacquiao’s fight, every time it was sang a little different from the original but do you hear them complain and rant about it? No. You hear cheers and shouts from all the Americans in the stadium. Do you see them trying to file a lawsuit to the one who sang the anthem? Again, no.
So what’s the problem here? Are you saying that the US is less strict about it? oooooh maybe we are just better than them quality wise, that’s why their a super power country and we are classmates with the poorest people on earth.
Can we just concentrate on what really matters? Like the corruption here in the Philippines.
Because for me as a FILIPINO, it is more embarrassing to have a corrupt country than a country that sings its national anthem off tempo.

Why there is always an issue on how the singer sang the national anthem?
I admire Arnel Pineda for admitting he had a mistake on singing it in different tune especially on the last line and more slower than the original.

The NHI officials should just let that issue pass. There are a lot of important things that matter other than punish singers who were not properly oriented on how they should sing the national anthem. This is so flimsy.

Arnel has nothing to apologize. What is wrong? It is his artistic freedom. The anthem is a bit modernized, but still patriotic bec. he didn’t change the lyrics. He didn’t ruin and disrespect our country. The people who ruined our country are outside the stadium. You’ll find them right there in our very own nighborhood. You’ll see them on TV and newspapers everyday
I think Arnel Pineda has nothing to apologize about his rendition of our national anthem, Lupang Hinirang, at Pacquiao-Clottey fight. His version maybe a bit modernized but still patriotic.There is nothing wrong about it. He was there to represent and give honor to the Filipino people the best he can.
Sa aking palagay, sana lahat ng singer na kumanta sa laban ni Pacquiao at kahit maging sa mga laban ng ibang boksingero ay sinunod na lamang nila ang tamang tempo o tune at maging ang lyrics ng kanta. Hindi ito dapat kalimutan. Ayos lang kung isang beses magkamali, pero ang sunod-sunod na mali ay maaaring pananadya na. May batas kasi na nagsasaad kung paano ang tamang pagkanta ng ating pambansang awit, at hindi puwedeng basta balewalain lang. Ano pa’t nagpatupad ng ganitong batas kung hindi naman nasusunod. Kung sa ganito kasimpleng batas ay hindi sumusunod ang mga tao, paano pa kaya ang mas mabibigat na batas sa atin, lalong hindi ito susundin. Wala namang mawawala kung susundin ang tamang pagkanta, hindi naman ito nakakabawas sa pagiging magaling ng isang singer. At ang pagsunod natin sa tamang pagkanta ay isang pagpupugay sa taong nagcompose at naglapat ng tunog sa pambansang awit. Hindi ba’t mas maganda kung ito ang ating susundin. Kung nabubuhay man si Julian Felipe ngayon, siguradong hindi siya natutuwa sa nangyayaring ito, hindi niya gusto na nag-aaway ang mga Pilipino dahil sa pambansang awit. Oo, may kalayaan ang bawat Pilipino sa gusto nilang gawin, pero hindi sa pambansang awit. Kaya nga tinawag na pambansang awit dahil iyon ang natatanging kanta ng mga Pilipino at hindi ito basta puwedeng baguhin. Kung publicity lamang ang gusto ng mga mang-aawit ay maghanap na lang sila ng ibang paraan kung paano sila pag-uusapan ng publiko pero huwag naman sana nilang gamitin ang Lupang Hinirang. Hindi rin sila ang dapat na maging mapagmataas gayon na sila ang nagkamali. Law excuses no one. Pero sabi nila masarap gawin ang bawal. Kung ang pananaw ng tao ay puwede silang sumuway sa batas, hindi matatapos ang ganitong problema.
Truly it is that those people who sang in Pacquiao’s fight, they sing it from the heart, their proud of being a Filipino, there’s no doubt about that, and no one complains about it, but we still have a law that we have to obey. Singing the national anthem properly with the right tune and lyrics must be done and should not be neglected. Having mistakes once is okay but getting wrong all over again, is getting worst also.
@grace I agree with you, It is correct that we should respect the law about our national anthem, but what ticks me the most is the motive of NHI in this situation, because its so obvious they want publicity, bkt sa laban lang ni pacquiao sila nagrereklamo? everyday may kumakanta ng national anthem, im sure many of them got it wrong, bkt walang kaso, bkt walang publicity?
If they are serious about it, they can privately talk to arnel pineda about the case that they will file, pero nde, sa media cla agad pumupunta eh.
Double standard kasi ang law natin eh, pag kung sino sino lang kumanta na wala sa tono pwede, pero pag big names ang kakanta saka sila mag fifile ng case.
Kung bawal, bawal talaga dapat, walang double standard, dapat kahit cnung police na makarinig na mali ang kanta eh arestuhin agad ang may sala!!
In my own opinion, the “Lupang Hinirang” version of Arnel Pineda was right, even though there are some changes in the original tune at the end of the song. Pero di-naman dapat gawing big deal ng NHI ang gantong kababaw na issue. I know they are just following the law but they have to be wise not to use this law for some idiotic ideas- Cause I believe that there are considerations for every Law. I hope this make sense.

I find it kinda funny that the NHI is making such a big fuss. Arnel sang it beautifully and it’s so obvious that he wanted every Filipino to be proud of the national anthem. He sang with feelings. I think our singers will be afraid to sing the national anthem if this issue persists.

The NHI are just doing their job, and there is nothing bullshit about it. Arnel for sure knows about RA 8491 but still he chosed to sang in defiance. What kind of values do we transcend then to the youth? A simple law we cannot follow? That I think is bullsh*t. No wonder this country is heading to the trash bin.
@Marilen I think the issue here is double standards like auhcron said, If you say the NHI is just doing their job then wow, they only do their job 2 or 3 times a year because Pacquiao only fight that much in a year.
When pacquiao doesn’t have a fight, do you hear them in the media? NO.
If thats their job then they should arrest every violators, not only the popular singers.

This is not the first time the NHI handed out warnings to artists deviating from the National Anthem’s correct form.One of the artist that been warned was Martin Nievera who sang the Philippine national Anthem in a different way. And now, Arnel Pineda…so, I think , in the next future fight of manny pacquaio, one of the NHI’s staff or officer should sing the song so that they will feel the feeling of the artist to sing in front of thousands of people.

I think they should let the artist sing first before they let them sing on the fight. So they can check if it is ok. i did not see anything wrong with arnel’s performance. i was at the casino, everybody stood up, sang, had goosebumps, applauded and became united. those critics should try to do the anthem in front of millions of viewers and let’s see how well they perform. arnel shouldnt apologize. critics should just mind their own business
So far, most of the singers who sung the national anthem for Manny are always connected with controversy with NHI. Yes, its has been a law to sing it in 3/4 tones but I think they should more serious in saving National Heritage sites. As long it is patriotic and sung in a justifiable manner, we should let it pass. There are more people who are bastardizing the anthem in many ways left unpunished, better start with them.
If NHI wants to raise money for their organization, find it somewhere else. Arnel Pineda is one of the few Filipinos who is making our country proud. What did Teddie Atienza contribute?

for me, mas importante yung pagkanta ng galing sa puso kahit na may konting pagkakamali kaysa sa pagkanta ng perpekto(which is impossible to all singers who will represent to sing the National Anthem because of different key tune of voice) pero wala naman sa puso nila yung pagkanta, bakit kaya di gumawa ng republic act na nagsasabing ang sino man kumanta ng national anthem na wala sa puso pero perfect yung pagkanta ay kakasuhan ng ganito ganyan. Ang NHI ay marami ng reklamo sa ganyan pero wala naman silang nasampahan yata kahit isa, may nakulong ba? wala naman di ba. Mas maraming issue sa ating bansa ang kailangan pagtuunan kaysa diyan sa bagay na yan.
What the heck is wrong with these people? Aren’t they getting enough funds from the government that they would resort to these tactics? All the singers who sang the national anthem in all of Pacquiao’s fight are reputable and respected artists in their own rights. Take note, ARTISTS!!! They’re not just anybody. These are people who have earned their niche in the industry. Slapping them with this kind of ridicule is unforgivable.
The National Anthem was written in blood by the real Filipino heroes of the Spanish revolution.It had both the Spanish and the Tagalog version.Let’s examine the irony of this fascination about the NHI suing Arnel..a modern-day OFW hero.The phrase in the song “SA MANLULUPIG ‘DI KA PASISIIL” is made up of very deep tagalog words which the modern-day-speakers will have a hard time understanding its meaning.Let me explain this in English.It literally means”TO THE INVADERS WE WILL NOT SURRENDER”.In any recorded history of man, invasion brings about denial and suppression of freedom.The Spanish invaded and occupied the Philippines. OMG! They’re going after a guy who just made tonal changes to our anthem. Compared to the list of “slides” the government allowed:
1) Overlooking a Constitutional violation to let someone with a criminal record RUN FOR OFFICE
2) Turning the other cheek when BLATANT violators for the SPENDING CAP ON ELECTION PROPAGANDA has occurred
3) Closing their eyes when OBVIOUS INFORMATION ON A CRIME is reported at the SENATE FLOOR and DOING NOTHING ABOUT IT
4) Smiling and letting a government official BUY FREAKIN’ EXPENSIVE HOUSE AND LOT(s) in the US WHEN OBVIOUSLY their NET WORTH STATED THEY COULD NOT HAVE HAD THE MONEY TO BUY THAT FREAKIN’ THING!
