Manny Villar’s latest TV ad, “Scroll”,has drawn a controversy for allegedly copying the “Truth (Upside Down)” political ad of Argentinian candidate Lopez Murphy in 2006. Barrio Siete Blog is the first one to notice this. Just view the two videos below. They are very similar. You decide.

In an interview, NP senatorial bet Gilbert Remulla said he did not know if the new TV ad was intentionally copied from the Murphy ad.

“What  we know is that it tested very well. For us, the message is more impotant. We can’t be acused of plagiarizing anything because the execution is different,” he told abs-cbnNEWS.com.

Though I am not a Manny Villar fan, I must say that this is one of his commercials that I enjoyed seeing. I’ve heard that he did copy the style from a political candidate in another country and I wasn’t surprised to hear that because honestly, many things we see on local TV nowadays is hardly ever original. Nonetheless, I think Manny Villar and his team executed the commercial well and probably his followers thought so too, whether it was original or not.

Clearly it is plagarized. Execution is exactly the same (scroll down, scroll up), and the message is very similar (talking about the beliefs of the candidate regarding his country and his countrymen).

So what’s wrong if it’s not an original idea, but a copied one? It’s intellectually dishonest. It’s a stolen idea and execution. So it appears that there are members of Manny’s team who do not mind being lazy at their jobs.

If that’s the kind of company Manny keeps, then good luck to us all.
