Philippine SWAT Should Be Abolished For Being Incompetent

Rolando Mendoza, an ex policemen, hijacked a bus full of Hong Kong tourist yesterday morning. He took the bus hostage in an attempt to to clear his name from charges of extortion that led to him being discharged from the police force in 2008. The horrible incident ended with 10 death tolls with another hostage succumbing to injuries in a hospital in Manila.

The Philippine SWAT team that handled the incident last night should be abolished for showing pure incompetency in the field.

In this kind of situations, the SWAT team should be in charge because they are trained to perform high-risk operations that fall outside of the abilities of regular officers. The SWAT (special weapons and tactics) team was present last night but they didn’t give justice to their label, clearly there were no tactics applied and I wouldn’t consider a giant hammer as a special weapon. They can’t even open a bus door if their lives depended on it.

First thing they should understand in a hostage taking situation is that the hostage taker is the boss and not them. There are two simple steps in solving this situation, first you can take out the hostage taker at once with snipers or any other means and second is to give the hostage taker his demands no matter how silly it is so you can end the situation at once and save the lives of the hostages. YOU DON’T ANGER THE HOSTAGE TAKER BY ARRESTING HIS FAMILY MEMBER. What they did is pure stupidity, they challenged the Mendoza by arresting his brother so he killed the hostages. Pure and simple.

So just abolished the SWAT team because they don’t serve any purpose here.

I think it comes down to 3 things……….

    Lack of equipment
    Lack of training
    Lack of planning
(exactly what you would expect from a developing country)

As they say ‘only good can come of bad’ and i hope that (know that) as a result of this the philippino police will improve and if another incident occurs they will be more oragnized.

I think its wrong to say that they are ‘incompetent’as im sure they have served their purpose in the past to great success (good news rarely makes the headlines) although this has exposed a vital need for better policing.

(I dont agree with the re instated tourist police, as i dont understand how you can stop shootings by putting more people on the street with guns?)

I hope people realise that one persons actions shouldnt reflect their country. I hope it doesnt affect tourism. I also believe philippinos (from my experiance) are some of the most caring honourable people i have ever met.

Its a shame something drastic always has to happen to enable things to improve.
